An adsorption powder for removing mercury and other metals, dioxins, furans and other organic compounds from metal- and organic compound-comtaminated soil and method therefor. The adsorption powder may be characterized as containing from about 1 to 97% of carbon, from about 1 to 97% of calcium hydroxide, from about 1 to 97% of cupric chloride, and from about 1 to 60% of KI.sub.3 impregnated carbon. The method of the invention may be characterized by the steps of: a) placing metal- and organic compound-contaminated soil in a kiln/drum; b) heating the kiln/drum to form a gas, wherein the gas contains the metal- and organic contaminated soil; c) transferring the gas to an exhaust cleaning unit/afterburner and the soil to a cooling unit; d) heating the gas in the cleaning unit/afterburner; e) cooling the gas and adding the adsorption powder thereto to produce a powder-containing gas component; f) transferring the powder-containing gas component to a baghouse; and g) releasing the substantially mercury-free gaseous component to the atmosphere.

O pó do adsorption pode ser caracterizado como conter de aproximadamente 1 a 97% do carbono, de aproximadamente 1 a 97% do hydroxide de cálcio, de aproximadamente 1 a 97% do cloreto cupric, e de aproximadamente 1 a 60% de KI.sub.3 impregnou o carbono. O método da invenção pode ser caracterizado pelas etapas de: a) colocando o solo orgânico do metal e composto-contaminado em um kiln/drum; b) aquecendo o kiln/drum para dar forma a um gás, wherein o gás contem o solo orgânico do metal e contaminado; c) transferindo o gás a uma limpeza unit/afterburner da exaustão e o solo a uma unidade refrigerando; d) aquecendo o gás na limpeza unit/afterburner; e) refrigerando o gás e adicionando o pó do adsorption a isso para produzir um componente pó-contendo do gás; f) transferindo o componente pó-contendo do gás a um baghouse; e g) liberando o componente gasoso substancialmente mercúrio-livre à atmosfera.
