A silylated polycarbonate comprises silylated carbonate units, where the silylated carbonate units can be derived from a silylated dihydroxy aromatic compound of the formula (1a): ##STR00001## wherein G.sup.a and G.sup.b are each independently C.sub.1-12 alkyl, --OSi(C.sub.1-12 alkyl).sub.3, C.sub.1-12 arylalkyl, or --OSi(C.sub.1-12 arylalkyl).sub.3; Z.sup.a and Z.sup.b are each independently a straight or branched C.sub.2-18 alkylene, a C.sub.8-18 arylalkylene, or a C.sub.8-18 alkylarylene, X.sup.a is a direct bond, a heteroatom-containing group, or a C.sub.1-18 organic group, and r and s are each independently 1 or 2. A method of forming the silylated dihydroxy aromatic compound, and for forming the silylated polycarbonate, are disclosed. Also disclosed is a thermoplastic composition comprising the silylated polycarbonate, and an article comprising the thermoplastic composition.
