The invention relates to additive systems which contain a phosphorus to nitrogen ratio of .gtoreq.1.0. The phosphorus contribution is primarily from an acid phosphate species and the sulfur content is primarily from an antiwear agent. This lubricant composition has been found to provide exceptional protection to new gears or "green gears", during the break-in phase.
