A liquid crystal composition having a nematic phase that includes a compound represented by Formula (1), a compound represented by Formulas (2-1) and (2-2), and a compound represented by Formulas (3-1) and (3-2), and a liquid crystal display device containing the composition: ##STR00001## wherein, for example, R.sup.1 is alkenyl having approximately 2 to approximately 12 carbons; R.sup.2 is alkyl having approximately 1 to approximately 12 carbons; Y.sup.1 is fluorine or chlorine; Y.sup.2 is fluorine or trifluoromethoxy; X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each independently hydrogen or fluorine; and Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are each independently a single bond or --CH.sub.2CH.sub.2--.
