The apparatus further includes an input section for inputting a type of recording medium, a storage section for storing plural types of recording media and corresponding plural maintenance intervals, and a controller for controlling the maintenance unit such that the controller selects a maintenance interval, corresponding to the type of recording medium having been input through the input section, and performs maintenance, according to the selected maintenance interval. A method for maintenance of a recording head selects a maintenance interval, corresponding to the type of recording medium having been input, and performs maintenance, according to the selected maintenance interval.
