A process is disclosed for the production of olefins including ethylene, propylene and butenes from methyl mercaptan. The process comprises a reaction whereby methyl mercaptan decomposes to produce the olefin and hydrogen sulfide. The reaction is carried out at an elevated temperature in the range of 300.degree. C. to 500.degree. C. to achieve pyrolysis. Alternatively, a heterogeneous catalyst may be used.
