A liquid crystal display with high contrast and little color difference between white plain color and black plain color is disclosed, in which in the color layers formed on an optically transparent substrate, the contrasts of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) CR.sub.R, CR.sub.G, and CR.sub.B have a relationship of 16.times.(CR.sub.R/CR.sub.G)-3>CR.sub.B/CR.sub.G>CR.sub.R/CR.sub.G, and the total contrast CR.sub.R, G, B calculated from the contrasts of color layers CR.sub.R, CR.sub.G, and CR.sub.B and the contrast of a polarizing plate CR.sub.POL satisfy a relationship of CR.sub.R, G, B/CR.sub.POL>0.11.
