A method of synthesis of alkali metal ferrates and alkaline earth metal ferrates, in which a trivalent iron compound is mixed with potash and optionally persulphate, and the mixture is heated at a temperature in the range of about 250 to about 500.degree. C. for about 1 to 10 hours. The invention also relates to the use of the ferrates obtained by this method.
