The present invention relates to a method of operating a base station (10) of a wireless communications network, wherein data is transmitted between said base station (10) and a radio network controller (20). The inventive method is characterized in that said base station (10) automatically issues a first capacity allocation message (CAM.sub.--1) to the radio network controller (20) which comprises capacity information on a basic data transfer capacity currently supported by the base station (10). The present invention further relates to a base station (10) and a radio network controller (20) of a wireless communications network.
