An enhancer for the absorption of low molecular weight substances by membrane permeation comprising poly-.gamma.-glutamic acid as an active ingredient, and a composition characterized by comprising poly-.gamma.-glutamic acid and a functional food component or drug the permeability of which improves in the presence of poly-.gamma.-glutamic acid, are provided.
