In an aspect, the present invention is an apparatus for magnetic resonance imaging that includes a short bore magnet that is oriented such that, when energized, a static magnetic field is created in a substantially vertical direction. In another aspect, the present invention is a method for performing magnetic resonance imaging using a short bore magnet that is oriented such that, when energized, a static magnetic field is created in a substantially vertical direction.
