A starter for igniting a fluorescent lamp comprises means for synchronizing the ignition voltage pulse with the preheat current in such a way that the ignition voltage pulse is applied in the direct vicinity of a zero-crossing of the preheat current. Lamp life is thereby considerably lengthened.
