The distance-measuring beam-type sensor system directs a measuring beam into an area in front of the vehicle so as to detect free areas in the traffic space that are potential parking spaces. The signal processing unit examines, upon a detecting of a free area, the dimensions of the free area and the suitability of the free area for parking.
