A class of proteoglycans containing fucosylated acidic glycans, e.g., as produced by marine sponges and sea urchin embryos, have been found to stimulate selective proliferation of mammalian natural killer (NK) cells and .gamma..delta.T cells. These compounds are useful as pharmaceuticals, particularly as immunostimulants, e.g., in the treatment of cancer and viral infections.
