Processes for preparing polymers of the formula ##STR1##

wherein m is 0 or 1, X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, and n, e, and f are each, independently of the others, integers wherein e may be 0 and n and f are each at least 1 by providing a first reaction mixture containing a first solvent, a compound of the formula ##STR2##

wherein Y is a chlorine or fluorine atom, a compound of the formula ##STR3##

and optionally, a compound of the formula ##STR4##

heating the first reaction mixture and removing generated water therefrom, thereby forming an intermediate polymer of the formula ##STR5##

providing a second reaction mixture containing a second solvent, the intermediate polymer, and a N-halosuccinimide, wherein the halogen atom in the N-halosuccinimide is the same as the halogen atom that is X; and heating the second reaction mixture, thereby forming the polymer.
