A filter (10) for use in a water heating vessel, such as an electric kettle,
to filter sedimentary material in the water includes a scale collector (25),
for example in the form of a compacted mesh block, carried on the filter. The block
can be supported by a carrier member (27) permanently or detachably mounted
on the filter frame, preferably towards an end of the filter closest to the bottom
of the vessel.
