A lubricant for a refrigerator using ammonia as the refrigerant, which
contains an additive selected from antioxidant, anti-wear additive and
metal deactivator, and the polyether compound represented by the following
general formula (1) or (2):

X{--O--(AO.sup.1).sub.a --(AO.sup.2).sub.b --H}.sub.p (2)
