The present invention relates to processes for the preparation of
enantiomerically enriched .beta.-amino acids. The invention also relates
to advantageous esters of .beta.-amino acids of the general formula (I)

and to the use thereof in the enzymatic preparation of enantiomerically
enriched .beta.-amino acids.
