A modem receiver has an equalizer which receives an input signal, an
adaptive compensator, and a decision block which generates a decision
related to the input signal. A difference between an output of the
equalizer and a compensating signal output of the adaptive compensator
provides an input for the decision block. A difference between the output
of the equalizer and an output of the decision block provides an error
estimation signal which is a first input to the adaptive compensator. A
difference between the input to the decision block and the output of the
decision block provides an error adaptation signal which is a second input
to the adaptive compensator.
