There are described benzoylcyclohexanediones of the formula I, their
preparation, and their use as herbicides and plant growth regulators.

is a hetero atom, X.sup.2 is a chain of carbon atoms, L is a chain-like
element, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 are various radicals,
and Y and Z are monoatomic bridge elements.
