The present invention relates to fused bicyclic metalloproteinase
inhibitors of the formula

wherein A, B, X, Y, and R.sup.1 are as defined in the specification, and to
pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treating arthritis,
inflammation, cancer and other disorders.
