Compounds of formula (I) in which R.sup.1 is halo-C.sub.1-10 alkyl; halo-C.sub.2-10 alkenyl; or (CH.sub.2).sub.n Y in which n is 1 or 2 and Y is OH, CN, N.sub.3, OR.sup.3, SH, S(O).sub.p R.sup.4, S(O).sub.3 H, NH.sub.2, NHR.sup.5, NR.sup.6 R.sup.7, NHCOR.sup.8, NO.sub.2, CO.sub.2 H, CONHR.sup.9, 1H-tetrazol-5-yl, 5-phenyltetrazol-2-yl or PO.sub.3 H.sub.2 ; R.sup.3, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 are each selected independently from C.sub.1-4 alkyl, aryl and aryl-C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sup.4 is selected from C.sub.1-4 alkyl, aryl, aryl-C.sub.1-4 alkyl, and 1H-tetrazol-5-yl, carboxy-(1-4C)alkyl and 1H-tetrazol-5-yl-C.sub.1-4 alkyl; and p is 0, 1, 2 or 3; or a salt or ester thereof, provided that R.sup.1 is not methoxymethyl, modulate metabotropic glutamate receptor function and are useful in treating disorders of the central nervous system.
