Process for the preparation of 1-hexane consisting in effecting the oligomerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a vanaduim complex having the formula: (arene).sub.2 VX wherein the term arene represents benzene or mono-, di-, or tri-alkylsubstituted benzene, V is a vanaduim ion with a low wxidation state, and X is an anion selected from non-coordinated anions such as B(Ar).sub.4 --, AlCl.sub.4 --, carboxylates and sulfonates.

Proceso para la preparación de 1-hexane que consiste en efectuar el oligomerization del etileno en la presencia de un catalizador que abarca un vanaduim complejo teniendo el fórmula: (arene).sub.2 VX en donde el arene del término representa el benceno o el mono -, los di -, o el tri-alkylsubstituted benceno, V es un ion del vanaduim con un estado bajo del wxidation, y X es un anión seleccionado de los aniones no-coordinados tales como --. carboxylates B(Ar).sub.4 --. AlCl.sub.4 y sulfonates.
