A white-emitting electroluminescent lamp is provided that uses a phosphor blend comprising a mixture of particles of an electroluminescent phosphor and particles of an europium-activated alkaline earth phosphor having the general formula Sr.sub.1-xCa.sub.xS:Eu where 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1, wherein the electroluminescent phosphor is selected from a blue-emitting electroluminescent phosphor, a blue-green-emitting electroluminescent phosphor, or a combination thereof. A preferred blend contains from about 5% to about 20% by weight of the europium-activated alkaline earth phosphor.
