There are provided according to the invention novel compounds of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: ##STR00001## wherein: X represents a nitrogen atom; Y represents --C(H.sub.2)--, (--C(H.sub.2)--).sub.2, --S(O.sub.2)-- or --C(.dbd.O)--; Z represents --C(H.sub.2)--, --S(O.sub.2)--, --N(R.sup.z)--, or an oxygen or sulphur atom; A represents hydrogen or --CH.sub.2OH; R.sup.z represents hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, --COR.sup.7 or --SO.sub.2R.sup.7; R.sup.1 represents halogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, .dbd.O, haloC.sub.1-6 alkyl, haloC.sub.1-6 alkoxy, hydroxyl or --CH.sub.2OH; m represents an integer from 0 to 3; R.sup.2 represents halogen, .dbd.O, C.sub.1-6 alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more hydroxyl groups), --COOR.sup.7, --CONR.sup.7R.sup.8, C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, haloC.sub.1-6 alkyl, haloC.sub.1-6 alkoxy or C.sub.1-6alkylOC.sub.1-6alkyl; n represents an integer from 0 to 3; p and q independently represent an integer from 0 to 2; R.sup.3 represents an -aryl, -heteroaryl, -heterocyclyl, -aryl-aryl, -aryl-heteroaryl, -aryl-heterocyclyl, -heteroaryl-aryl, -heteroaryl-heteroaryl, -heteroaryl-heterocyclyl, -heterocyclyl-aryl, -heterocyclyl-heteroaryl or -heterocyclyl-heterocyclyl group, all of which may be optionally substituted by one or more (e.g. 1, 2 or 3) halogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more hydroxyl groups), C.sub.3-8 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, hydroxyl, haloC.sub.1-6 alkyl, haloC.sub.1-6 alkoxy, cyano, --S--C.sub.1-6 alkyl, --SO--C.sub.1-6 alkyl, --SO.sub.2--C.sub.1-6 alkyl, --COR.sup.7, --CONR.sup.7R.sup.8, --NR.sup.7R.sup.8, --NR.sup.7COC.sub.1-6 alkyl, --NR.sup.7SO.sub.2--C.sub.1-6 alkyl, C.sub.1-6 alkyl-NR.sup.7R.sup.8, --OCONR.sup.7R.sup.8, --NR.sup.7CO.sub.2R.sup.8 or --SO.sub.2NR.sup.7R.sup.8 groups; R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 independently represent C.sub.1-6 alkyl, or R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached may together form a C.sub.3-8 cycloalkyl group; R.sup.6 represents halogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, C.sub.3-8 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, haloC.sub.1-6 alkyl or haloC.sub.1-6 alkoxy; s represents an integer from 0 to 4; R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 independently represent hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl or C.sub.3-8 cycloalkyl;or solvates thereof.
