The invention provides compounds of formula (I): ##STR00001## wherein: X is CH.sub.2, O, S(O).sub.2 or NR.sup.10; Y is a bond, CH.sub.2, NR.sup.35, CH.sub.2NH, CH.sub.2NHC(O), CH(OH), CH(NHCOR.sup.33), CH(NHSO.sub.2R.sup.34), CH.sub.2O or CH.sub.2S; Z is C(O), or when Y is a bond Z can also be S(O).sub.2; R.sup.1 is optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heterocyclyl or C.sub.4-6 cycloalkyl fused to a benzene ring; and R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.32, R.sup.33, R.sup.34 and R.sup.35 are as defined herein; are modulators of chemokine (especially CCR3) activity (for use in, for example, treating asthma). The invention also provides a process for making 4-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)piperidine, which is useful as an intermediate for making certain compounds of the invention.
