Benzamide derivatives of formulae I and II, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates, stereoisomers, and prodrugs thereof, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising the same, are described and have therapeutic utility, particularly in the treatment of diabetes, obesity, and related conditions and disorders: ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.11, and R.sup.12 are defined as provided herein.
