The present invention provides a color filter that makes a liquid crystal display satisfactorily reproduce halftone color by effectively reducing color shift that occurs when the color on the liquid crystal display is changed stepwise from white to black, and a liquid crystal display comprising the color filter. A color filter 10 comprises red, green, and blue color patterns 10R, 10G, 10B corresponding to the display areas that the respective pixels in a liquid crystal driving cell 20 form. In the color filter 10, the contrasts of the red, green, and blue color patterns 10R, 10G, 10B (the individual contrasts of the color patterns) are preferably in the following relationship. Specifically, it is preferred that the contrast C.sub.R of the red color pattern 10R, the contrast C.sub.G of the green color pattern 10G, and the contrast C.sub.B of the blue color pattern 10B fulfill the relationship C.sub.R
