An electronic circuit includes storage circuitry and a speech coder coupled with the storage circuitry to have a codebook with sets of track location numbers for respective pulses, the speech coder operable to identify a group of track location numbers in the codebook substantially equally spaced from each other by a pitch lag amount, and make a selection from the group of track location numbers of a selected track location number.
