Disclosed are compounds of the formula (I) ##STR00001## wherein A, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and X.sub.1 are as disclosed herein. The compounds have affinity for the ORL1 receptor and are useful in the treatment of chronic and acute pain.
