A magnetic storage system comprises a read element and an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit that includes a shunting device including a first terminal that communicates with a first terminal of the read element and a second terminal that communicates with a second terminal of the read element. The shunting device is conductive when the read element is disabled and nonconductive when the read element is enabled.
