Gold oxide is precipitated together with iron oxide from a solution containing a gold source and an iron source; the gel formed thereby is washed, dried, ground to a size range of 0.85 mm to 4.25 mm, calcined and activated by passing a hydrogen and oxygen containing gas through it; then used as a catalyst for oxidizing CO to CO.sub.2 in the presence of a large excess of hydrogen.
