An oil-resistant sheet material having low resistance to air permeability and excellent oil resistance and particularly suitable for use as a packaging material for food containing edible oil. The oil-resistant sheet material is obtained by forming at least one coating layer containing a hydrophobized starch and a crosslinking agent on at least one side of a substrate in an amount of 0.5 to 20 g/m.sup.2. When the coating layer further contains fatty acid and/or polyvinyl alcohol, oil resistance is improved. A coating layer containing fatty acid as a main component or a coating layer containing polyvinyl alcohol as a main component may be applied onto the above-described coating layer to form at least two coating layers.
