A process for manufacturing simvastatin is provided using novel
intermediates. Thus, for example, lovastatin is reacted with
methoxyethylamine, alpha methylated 2-methylbutyryl side chain of the
amide formed, hydrolyzed and lactonized to produce finally simvastatin of
high purity.
