A process for preparing sodium carbonate is provided in which sodium bicarbonate is heated to a temperature of between 80 and 250 .degree. C. and at a pressure between grater than 1 bar and 20 bars. The sodium bicarbonate may be heated in the presence of an activation gas containing carbon dioxide and water.
