Optical amplifying glass and optical waveguide

An optical amplifying glass comprising 100 parts by mass of a matrix glass and from 0.1 to 10 parts by mass of Er doped to the matrix glass, wherein the matrix glass comprises Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3, at least one of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and SiO.sub.2, at least one member selected from the group consisting of Ga.sub.2 O.sub.3, WO.sub.3 and TeO.sub.2, and La.sub.2 O.sub.3 in such a ratio that Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3 is from 20 to 80 mol %, B.sub.2 O.sub.3 +SiO.sub.2 is from 5 to 75 mol %, Ga.sub.2 O.sub.3 +WO.sub.3 +TeO.sub.2 is from 0.1 to 35 mol %, and La.sub.2 O.sub.3 is from 0.01 to 15 mol %.
