Disclosed are compounds of formula I:

R.sup.2 is H, halogen, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, O(C.sub.1-4)alkyl, NH(C.sub.1-4
alkyl) or N(C.sub.1-4 alkyl).sub.2 ;
R.sup.4 is H or CH.sub.3 ;
R.sup.5 is H or CH.sub.3 ;
R.sup.12 is H, halogen, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, CF.sub.3, or NO.sub.2 ;
R.sup.13 is H, (C.sub.1-4)alkyl, halogen, OH, or NH.sub.2, with the proviso
that R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 are not both H; and
R.sup.14 is COOR.sup.14a wherein R.sup.14a is H or (C.sub.1-6)alkyl; or
R.sup.14 is (C.sub.2-4)alkenyl-COOR.sup.14a
wherein R.sup.14a is as defined herein; or R.sup.14 is
(C.sub.1-4)alkyl-COOR.sup.14a wherein R.sup.14a is as defined above;
or a salt or a prodrug thereof, useful as inhibitors of HIV reverse
transcriptase.
