A process which comprises admixing in the absence of a solvent an amine of
the formula R.sub.1 --NH.sub.2 and a first ester of the formula

wherein R.sub.2 is an electron withdrawing group and R.sub.3 is an alkyl
group; heating the mixture containing the amine and the first ester to
form an intermediate compound of the formula

admixing the intermediate compound with a base and a second ester of the
formula
##STR3##
said second ester being present in a molar excess relative to the
intermediate compound, said base being present in a molar excess relative
to the intermediate compound, and heating the mixture to form a pyridone
compound of the formula

or a salt thereof. Also disclosed is a process for preparing diazopyridone
colorants which comprises preparing a pyridone compound by the above
process and reacting the pyridone compound with a diazonium salt to form a
diazopyridone compound.
Ein Prozeß, der das Beimischen in Ermangelung eines Lösungsmittels eines Amins der Formel R.sub.1 -- NH.sub.2 und ein erster Ester vom Formel ## STR1 ## enthält, worin R.sub.2 ein Elektron ist, das Gruppe und R.sub.3 zurücknimmt, ist eine Alkylgruppe; die Mischung heizend, die das Amin und den ersten Ester enthält, um ein Zwischenmittel des Formel ## STR2 ## zu bilden beimischt das Zwischenmittel mit einer Unterseite und einen zweiten Ester des Formel ## STR3 ##, sagte den zweiten Ester, der in einem molaren Überfluß im Verhältnis zu der zusammengesetzten, besagten Zwischenunterseite anwesend ist, die in einem molaren Überfluß im Verhältnis zu dem Zwischenmittel anwesend ist und die Mischung heizt, um ein pyridone Mittel des Formel ## STR4 ## oder des Salzes davon zu bilden. Auch gegeben ein Prozeß für das Vorbereiten der diazopyridone Farbstoffe frei, das das Vorbereiten eines pyridone Mittels durch den oben genannten Prozeß und das Reagieren des pyridone Mittels mit einem Diazoniumsalz enthält, um ein diazopyridone Mittel zu bilden.
