Couplers for hair coloring compositions for oxidative dyeing of hair are compounds of the formula (1): ##STR1## wherein X is selected from halogen and R.sup.5 SO.sub.4 ; R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each individually selected from C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 alkyl and C.sub.1 to C.sub.22 mono or dihydroxyalkyl and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are individually selected from C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl groups, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 hydroxyalkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkoxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 aminoalkyl or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 together form a C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 alkylene group.
