A cleaning composition containing a gemini surfactant corresponding to formula I: R--CHOH--CH.sub.2 --[OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 ].sub.x --O--CH.sub.2 --CHOH--R (I) wherein R is a linear or branched alkyl and/or alkenyl radical having from about 4 to 22 carbon atoms, and x is a number from about 5 to 90.
