An optical amplifying glass having Er doped in an amount of from 0.01 to 10% as represented by mass percentage to a matrix glass comprising, by mol %, BiO.sub.2 : 20 to 80, B.sub.2 O.sub.3 +SiO.sub.2 : 5 to 75, Ga.sub.2 O.sub.3 +WO.sub.3 +TeO.sub.2 : 0.1 to 35, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.ltoreq.10, GeO.sub.2.ltoreq.30, TiO.sub.2.ltoreq.30, and SnO.sub.2.ltoreq.30, and containing no CeO.sub.2.
