A polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) having a desired configuration is produced using a raw material containing .omega.-(4-vinylphenyl)-alkanoic acid and (.omega.-substituted alkanoic acid in which a group having a ring structure selected from phenyl, thienyl, and cyclohexyl structures substitutes therefor on the end thereof by producing a PHA copolymer containing the corresponding 3-hydroxy-.omega.-(4-vinylphenyl)-alkanoate unit and the corresponding 3-hydroxy-.omega.-substituted alkanoate unit by making use of a microorganism capable of producing the PHA or by oxidizing a predetermined portion of the corresponding PHA.

Um polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) que tem uma configuração desejada é produzido usando um material cru que contem o ácido omega.-(4-vinylphenyl)-omega.-(4-vinylphenyl)-alkanoic e (o ácido alkanoic omega.-substituído em que um grupo que tem uma estrutura do anel selecionada do phenyl, do thienyl, e das estruturas cyclohexyl substitui therefor na extremidade disso produzindo um copolymer de PHA que contem a unidade 3-hydroxy-.omega.-(4-vinylphenyl)-alkanoate correspondente e a unidade correspondente do alkanoate 3-hydroxy-.omega.-substituted empregando um microorganism capaz de produzir o PHA ou oxidando uma parcela predeterminada do PHA correspondente.
