Provided are a polymeric gel electrolyte comprising a lithium salt, an organic solvent and a thermal curing product of a composition having a terpolymer having a repeating unit represented by formula (1), a repeating unit represented by formula (2) and a repeating unit represented by formula (3): ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 1 to 12, and R is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkyl group, and a lithium battery employing the polymeric electrolyte. Use of a polymeric gel electrolyte according to the present invention can effectively suppress swelling due to an electrolytic solution, and a lithium battery which can prevent reliability and safety from being lowered due to the swelling, can be attained.
