A process for preparing amines comprises reacting an epoxide of the formula (I) ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each, independently of one another, hydrogen or a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.2 -C.sub.200 -hydrocarbon radical, with ammonia and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, where the molar ratio of ammonia:epoxide is from 5:1 to 500:1 and the hydrogen pressure is from 10 bar to 500 bar.
