The invention provides a process for the in-situ generation of a metathesis active catalyst of the formula: ##STR1## comprising contacting an NHC carbene with a dimer of the formula [(arene)MX.sup.1 X].sub.2 and an ##STR2## alkyne of the formula RC.ident.CR.sup.1 or wherein M is ruthenium or osmium; X and X.sup.1 are the same or different and are each independently an anionic ligand; NHC is any N-heterocyclic carbene ligand; R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted substituent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkynyl, aryl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 carboxylate, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyloxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkynyloxy, aryloxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylsulfonyl and C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkylsulfinyl; and R.sup.3 is OH. Preferably, the NHC is an s-IMES or IMES carbene ligand; the arene is preferably p-cymene and the alkyne is preferably acetylene. The invention further provides a process for ROMP and RCM reactions using the metathesis active catalysts.

Preferivelmente, o NHC é s-IMES ou de carbene de IMES ligand; a arena é preferivelmente p-cymene e o alkyne é preferivelmente acetileno.
