Derivatives of sphingolipids of the formula: ##STR1## are provided wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification and wherein there is at least one R.sup.2 substituent in the sphingolipid derivative. The compounds are useful in the treatment of of abnormal cell proliferation, including benign and malignant tumors, the promotion of cell differentiation, the induction of apoptosis, the inhibition of protein kinase C, and the treatment of inflammatory conditions, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease as well as proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the course of development of plaques in vascular tissue. The invention also includes a method for triggering the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria that includes administering an effective amount of a sphingolipid or its derivative or prodrug to a host in need thereof. Further, the invention provides a method for treating bacterial infections, including those that influence colon cancer and other disorders of the intestine, that includes administering an effective amount of one of the active compounds identified herein.

Ableitungen von sphingolipids der Formel: ## STR1 ## werden zur Verfügung gestellt, worin die Substituenten sind, wie in der Spezifikation definiert und worin es mindestens einen Substituenten R.sup.2 in der sphingolipid Ableitung gibt. Die Mittel sind in der Behandlung der anormalen Zelle starker Verbreitung, einschließlich die gutartigen und bösartigen Tumoren, in der Förderung der Zelle Unterscheidung, in der Induktion von apoptosis, in der Hemmung von Proteinkinase C und in der Behandlung der entzündlichen Bedingungen, psoriasis, entzündliche Darmkrankheit sowie starke Verbreitung der glatten Muskelzellen im Verlauf der Entwicklung der Plaketten im Gefäßgewebe nützlich. Die Erfindung schließt auch eine Methode für das Auslösen der Freigabe Zellfarbstoffs c von den Mitochondrien ein, der das Ausüben einer wirkungsvollen Menge eines sphingolipid oder seiner Ableitung oder Prodrug zu einem Wirt in der Notwendigkeit davon einschließt. Weiter stellt die Erfindung eine Methode für das Behandeln der bakteriellen Infektion, einschließlich die zur Verfügung, die Darmkrebs und andere Störungen des Darmes beeinflussen, der das Ausüben einer wirkungsvollen Menge von einem der aktiven Mittel einschließt, die hierin gekennzeichnet werden.
