A purified, soluble lymphocyte-derived antimicrobial protein that has a molecular weight of 16 kD on SDS-PAGE, is inactivated by heating at 56.degree. C. for 30 minutes or by treatment with trypsin, is expressed by CD3-, CD2+ cytokine-stimulated cells', and is active against Gram positive or Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus.
