The invention provides a process for producing a fluorine-containing compound from an inexpensive material. Namely, Compound I such as R.sup.A CH.sub.2 OH is reacted with Compound II such as XCOR.sup.B to form Compound III such as R.sup.A CH.sub.2 OCOR.sup.B, followed by fluorination in a liquid phase to form Compound IV such as R.sup.AF CF.sub.2 OCOR.sup.BF, which is converted to Compound V such as R.sup.AF COF and/or Compound VI such as R.sup.BF COF. R.sup.A is an alkyl group or the like, R.sup.B is a perhalogenoalkyl group or the like, R.sup.AF and R.sup.BF are fluorinated R.sup.A and R.sup.B, and X is halogen.
