An improved method for refining cellulose that produces a highly refined cellulosic material comprising soaking raw material in a mild NaOH using reduced temperatures and pressures, and refining the material with a plate refiner so that a waste water stream is reduced in volume and has a pH within a range of 8 to 9. Also, a HRC gel having a lignin concentration of at least about one (1)% by weight, and a water retention capacity of about 25 to at least about 56 g H.sub.2 O/g dry HRC is provided.

Eine verbesserte Methode für das Verfeinern von von Zellulose enthält, die ein in hohem Grade raffiniertes zellulosehaltiges Material produziert, das tränkenden Rohstoff in einem milden NacOh mit verringerten Temperaturen und Druck, und das Verfeinern des Materials mit einem Platte Abscheider, damit ein Abwasserstrom im Volumen verringert und einen pH innerhalb eines Bereiches 8 bis 9 hat wird. Auch ein HRC Gel, das eine Ligninkonzentration von mindestens ungefähr einer hat (1)% nach Gewicht und eine Wasserzurückhaltenkapazität von ungefähr 25 bis mindestens ungefähr 56 g H.sub.2 O/g trockenes HRC wird zur Verfügung gestellt.
