A liquid crystal layer, made of a liquid crystal material having a negative
dielectric anisotropy, is sealed between an opposing substrate and a pixel
substrate that are arranged face to face with each other; thus, a liquid
crystal panel of the birefringence control type is constructed. In this
liquid crystal panel, the liquid crystal molecules, provided as the liquid
crystal material, are kept in an oriented state in which they incline by
an angle in the range of 3.degree. to 10.degree. with respect to the
direction that is normal to the opposing substrate and the pixel
substrate. Upon application of a driving voltage to the liquid crystal
layer, since the pretilt angle, which is the initial angle of inclination
of the liquid crystal molecules, is set at a value greater than that of a
conventional apparatus, the occurrence of reverse tilt regions can be
suppressed. Thus, the disclination line, which is formed by the effect of
electric potentials exerted between the adjacent pixels, is shifted toward
the edge of the pixel. The shift of the disclination line suppresses the
occurrence of disclination in a wider region, thereby increasing the
effective reflectance of the pixels.
Una capa cristalina líquida, hecha de un material cristalino líquido que tiene un anisotropy dieléctrico negativo, se sella entre un substrato de oposición y un substrato del pixel que sean cara dispuesta a hacer frente con uno a; así, un panel cristalino líquido del tipo del control de la birrefringencia se construye. En este panel cristalino líquido, las moléculas cristalinas líquidas, con tal que como el material cristalino líquido, se mantienen un estado orientado en el cual se inclinen por un ángulo en la gama de 3.degree. a 10.degree. con respecto a la dirección que es normal al substrato de oposición y al substrato del pixel. Sobre el uso de un voltaje que conduce a la capa cristalina líquida, desde el ángulo del pretilt, que es el ángulo inicial de la inclinación de las moléculas cristalinas líquidas, se fija en un valor mayor que el de un aparato convencional, la ocurrencia de las regiones reversas de la inclinación puede ser suprimido. Así, la línea del disclination, que es formada por el efecto de potenciales eléctricos ejerció entre los pixeles adyacentes, se cambia de puesto hacia el borde del pixel. La cambio de la línea del disclination suprime la ocurrencia del disclination en una región más amplia, de tal modo aumentando la reflexión eficaz de los pixeles.
